GreekAlphabet101.com - A Greek Alphabet Primer

Welcome to this page. In addition to having been the natural everyday script for the language of the people of Greece for thousands of years, the Greek alphabet and script is frequently used in international circles in Mathematics, Physics and much other scientific notation. There are 24 letters in the Greek alphabet, many of which do not directly correspond to a Latin equivalent and others which are not sounded in the same way as those letters that may commonly be regarded as the corresponding Latin letter. Examples of letters with no equivalent include È (Theta) and Ø (Psi) whilst less obvious differences are Gamma, in speech, which is more akin to a y sound, Delta to a th, Beta to a v and so on. Hard G (go) , D (done) and B (bar) sounds are written, instead, as ÃÊ (ãê) , ÍÔ (íô) and ÌÐ (ìð). Latin script letters that do not exist in the Greek system include Q and J.
